A Beginner's Guide to Updating Your Apple Devices

Updating your Apple device is one of the easiest ways to keep it running smoothly and securely. Software updates fix bugs, improve performance, and add new features. Most updates only take a few minutes to install.

Before you begin, make sure your device is connected to Wi-Fi and has plenty of battery power. If possible, keep it plugged into a charger during the update.

How to Update Your iPad

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Tap General, then Software Update.

  3. Your iPad will check to see if an update is available.

  4. If you see one, tap Download and Install.

  5. Follow the instructions on the screen. Your iPad may restart when the update is finished.

How to Update Your Mac

  1. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the screen.

  2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences if you have an older Mac).

  3. Click General, then Software Update.

  4. If an update is available, click Update Now or Upgrade Now.

  5. Your Mac may restart during the update. This is normal.

How to Update Your Apple TV

  1. Open Settings on your Apple TV.

  2. Select System, then Software Updates.

  3. Choose Update Software.

  4. If an update is available, select Download and Install.

  5. Leave your Apple TV connected to power until the update is complete.

Helpful Tips

  • Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network before starting.

  • Keep your device plugged into a power source whenever possible.

  • Save any work and close open apps before installing an update.

  • Consider turning on Automatic Updates so your device can install future updates with little or no effort.
